Catching up With Devon’s ‘Hats by Katie!’

It’s been four years since we sat down with Katie Whaley, owner of Hats by Katie, and The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair’s official milliner.

With the biggest Ladies Day in Devon history on the horizon this Wednesday, emceed by celebrity Carson Kressley, we thought it was due time to catch up on all that is fab, fashionable and ‘fascinating’ in the hat world with Ms. Whaley.

AML: Since we last chatted ‘hats’ for AML in 2010, we’ve had a royal wedding and hats seem to have become more mainstream in America. What’s changed from your point of view?

HBK: The fascinator has really taken over in the US. Americans have become more bold with their hat choices instead of being ‘matchy, matchy’ they are complimenting their outfits with their hat color choices. I’m thrilled to be able to encourage my customers to think outside of the box in their hat selections.

Spotlight: Milliner Katie Whaley

Hats by Katie at Devon

Excerpts from the spotlight:

"Hats by Katie launched in 1990 with Whaley utilizing her arts minor from Boston’s Regis College as the basis for beginning a millinery business that is now world-renowned."

"AML: Your hats are worn around the world at all the major equestrian events. That is amazing!

KW: I do a lot to Ascot. Now that I have started showing in Europe with my ponies, I sold one of my feather hats right off my head. When I traveled back and forth recently to Europe, I delivered two more."

"AML: Can any woman wear a hat?

KW: Yes, you just have to find the right one. That’s kind of a misnomer-they come in here during the Horse Show and say ‘Oh, I look terrible in hats.’ Well, first of all they are not wearing them correctly. The brim should be parallel to the ground. And the hat should be in proportion to your body. The whole trick of the hat is that the hat does not wear you, you wear the hat. If you live by that phrase, you will be fine."

One of the Editors at "O" (Oprah Winfrey's magazine) saw Katie's website and liked the styles of hats she saw there. She then contacted Katie and asked her to send eight hats for the Garden Party (2006) shoot.

Oprah's TV show producer liked her Hat by Katie so much she bought it!

Katie got a lovely note thanking her for the loan of her hats for the shoot.

Even Oprah loved her hat!

Hats by Katie was featured in the March/April 2006 issue of Southern Lady Magazine!

Southern Ladies"...When several large boxes arrived at our editorial offices, quite a commotion ensued. We all crowded around as style director Yukie McLean began sifting through a sea of green tissue paper, revealing one of the most beautiful hats we've ever seen.                                                  "Collective oohs and aahs rose from our lips as one by one a parade of feathers and frills appeared right before our eyes. A frenzied delight surrounded our team as we took turns donning these lovely creations, and you'll see why when you take a look at this issue's feature on hat designer Katie Whaley..."
